A Step-by-Step Guide to My Commission Process
Ever thought about having your favourite view turned into a one-of-a-kind painting? Whether it’s a mountain that means the world to you or a landscape that holds special memories, I’d love to create something unique for your wall.
I offer a few different styles of commission work, so the process can vary slightly depending on what you’re after. Here’s a quick overview:
-
Geometric Mountain Landscapes
Bold, angular designs inspired by the light and shade of mountain forms. These require more reference images (at least three of the same mountain) so I can pick out the most recognisable features.
-
Minimal Landscapes and seascapes
A softer, simplified style that works beautifully for seascapes, horizons and your favourite views. These usually only require one or two reference images to capture the mood and composition.
-
Topographic Embroidery Commissions
I also take on embroidery commissions, which follow a slightly different process. I sharing more about that here.
Here’s how the process works for painting commissions:
1. Choosing the Size
The price depends on the size of the painting, and I can usually work to whatever size you like (as long as I can get hold of the right canvas). The largest single canvas I can currently do is 90 x 60 cm. Anything bigger than that would need to be created as a diptych (two canvases making one painting) or a triptych (three canvases).
2. Sending Images
I’ll need photos of the view you’d like painted.
-
For geometric mountain paintings, I’ll need at least three images of the same mountain, ideally from different angles and lighting conditions.
-
For minimal landscapes, one or two clear reference images are usually enough.
In both cases, the images can be your own photos or ones sourced online, as long as they show the whole view and mountain images should have good light and contrast.
3. Securing Your Spot
A 50% non-refundable deposit is required upfront to get started.
4. The Design Stage
Once I have your images and any colour preferences, I’ll create a rough digital sketch of the painting. This is the point where you can request changes before I start the real thing.
Timescale: I’ll usually get the digital sketch back to you within 10 working days of receiving both your deposit and suitable images.
5. The Painting
Once you’ve approved the design, I’ll begin the painting. Depending on the size, your finished artwork will be completed within 2–4 weeks of approval. Once completed, I’ll send you photos of the final piece, and at this stage, the remaining 50% balance + delivery cost will be due.
6. Delivery or Collection
-
If you’re local to Sheffield, we may be able to arrange a collection, no delivery cost and more flexibility with size.
-
Otherwise, the painting will be carefully packaged and shipped to you, normally via DHL express service.
A Few Things to Note
-
Once painting has started, I can’t make major changes (the techniques I use don’t allow it without starting over). Small colour tweaks are sometimes possible.
-
All commission orders are non-refundable.
