How to Commission a Topographic Map Embroidery

Looking for a unique, handmade piece of art to celebrate your favourite mountain? I create custom topographic map embroideries, and commissioning one is simple and straightforward.

1. Choosing the Location

I can create an embroidery for any location as long as I can access a topographic map for that area. Topographic maps show the shape and elevation of the land, using contour lines to indicate hills, valleys, and other features. These lines are what I use to create the embroidery, so it’s important that the map has enough detail about changes in elevation. Just let me know the place you’d like to feature, and I’ll check the map availability.

2. Size & Price

Embroidery hoop sizes range from 5” to 12” in diameter. The price depends on the size of the embroidery and the amount of detail in the topographic map, as more intricate terrain requires additional time and stitching.

3. Colour Selection

You can select your preferred thread colours for the piece. If you’re unsure, feel free to refer to my previous work for inspiration. I’m happy to help you pick colours that will work beautifully together.

4. The Commission Process

The process for embroidery commissions is similar to my painting commissions:

  1. Deposit: A 50% non-refundable deposit is required upfront to secure your commission.

  2. Digital Sketch: Once your deposit is paid and colours confirmed, I’ll create a rough digital sketch of the embroidery based on the topographic map. You can review this and request minor adjustments before I begin stitching. The digital sketch will usually be ready within 10 working days of receiving your deposit and colour information.

  3. Embroidery: After you approve the sketch, I’ll start the embroidery. Depending on the size and detail, the embroidery will be completed within 2–4 weeks of sketch approval.

  4. Completion: When the embroidery is finished, I’ll send photos for approval. The remaining 50% balance + delivery cost will be due at this stage.

5. Delivery

When full payment has been received, your embroidery will be carefully packaged and shipped to you via a tracked postal service.

A Few Things to Note

  • Once embroidery has started, major changes cannot be made.

  • All commission orders are non-refundable.
